Position Summary
The Clinical Research Nurse (RN) will participate and manage in the assessment, planning, implementation, treatment and evaluation of patient care in a dynamic clinical care/research environment. This position will interact with patients across the lifespan at various levels of the health continuum. The individual exhibits exemplary clinical judgment and caring practices in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team to promote patient care and the research mission. This position functions as a backup float nurse in the clinical Emergency Department providing nursing care when not engaged in research activities.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Recruits study participants from patient population in the clinical Emergency Department.
- Evaluates potential study participants to ensure they meet eligibility requirements; instructs study participants concerning protocol and completes the patient consenting procedure.
- Performs clinical nursing activities including providing age-appropriate nursing care to patients following accepted nursing practices, University of Arizona Health Network policies and procedures and physician prescription.
- Functions as a back-up float nurse in the clinical Emergency Department providing nursing care when not engaged in research activities.
- Coordinates and administers the nursing care functions within a research project in accordance with research protocols and the daily administration and staff supervision of the research project.
- Schedules and/or coordinates required laboratory tests and/or exams.
- Evaluates and develops patient educational materials and gives patient and/or family members instructions on drug administration and other medical information.
- Provides current patient information to nurses and other health care personnel in order to assure comprehensive patient care.
- Will be expected to facilitate the educational mission of the institutions.
- May train, oversee, and mentor other research staff. Will be expected to use proper delegation of tasks within each institution.
- Directs the work of support staff, laboratory technicians, and assistants to ensure efficient, timely, and high quality results and adherence to research protocols.
- Assists in completion of case report forms for each study participant and is responsible for audit preparation, as well as maintaining a main database.
- Assesses research study participants for evidence of drug toxicity, unexpected side effects or other problems and notifies principal investigator; and IRB.
- Coordinates and maintains contact with patients, physicians, pharmaceutical companies, and/or other related parties to recruit participants and gain continuing support for the studies.
- Identifies problems and trends, recommending procedural changes to the principle administrator and administrator if or when there are issues with treatment protocols.
- Keeps the clinical trial principal investigator and administrator informed of research and administrative progress through progress reports and other communications on a regular basis.
- Collects, logs, and verifies research data; interprets results; produces interim reports, presentation and publications; participates in the writing of scientific papers, reports, manuscripts, and/or grant proposals.

Additional Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree from a state Board of Nursing approved school of nursing AND two years of professional experience; OR Associate's degree or diploma in Nursing from a State Board of Nursing approved school of nursing AND four years of professional nursing experience.
- Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Arizona; OR, possesses a temporary license from the Arizona State Board of Nursing to practice as a Registered Nurse; permanent license from the Arizona State Board of Nursing required within four months of employment.
- Prior experience in a critical setting (ED, ICU, Trauma).
- Current certifications in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
- Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support must be obtained within six months of hire date.
- Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC).
- Board-certified in a critical care area (CEN, CCRN, CFTRN).
- Experience in pharmaceutical-sponsored and investigator-initiated clinical research trials.
- Knowledge of clinical trials and data management techniques.
- Ability to effectively trouble-shoot problems, particularly in stressful situations and fast-paced environments.
- Skill in medical assessment techniques.
- Skill in coordinating the work of others.
- Skill in maintaining detailed records.
- Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, Access and web-based data entry systems.
